- IONITY applies for key funding through the MOVES III program to expand its public high-power charging network across Spain.
- In total, IONITY plans to establish over 20 high-power charging sites throughout Spain, backed by more than €6 million in MOVES III funding.
- Several autonomous regions in Spain have already approved MOVES III funding for IONITY’s expansion project.
Munich, Germany, 10 December 2024 – IONITY, the leading high-power charging (HPC) network in Europe open to all Electric Vehicle (EV) brands, applies for the MOVES III program in Spain to expand its charging network further. The funding program is centrally managed by the IDAE (Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía) and financed by the European Union with the NextGenerationEU funds that supports the investment in charging infrastructure for EVs.
IONITY’s MOVES III project aims to establish over 20 high-power charging (HPC) locations in over ten different autonomous communities. Each charging point provides up to 350 kilowatt (kW) and an average of six charging points per location, enabling long distance travel after charging for just 15-20 minutes. One of the objectives of this project will be to focus on the deployment of stations in remote locations or regions where EV adoption is still low, creating a non-discriminatory and interoperable network in Spain. While other specific locations are planned to increase cross-border traffic and support seamless connection to the IONITY network in neighbouring countries.
The Government of Catalonia through the Catalan Energy Institute (ICAEN), the Government of Castilla-la Mancha, the Government of Navarre, the Basque Government, through the Basque Energy Agency (EVE), the Generalitat Valenciana through the Institut Valencià de Competitivitat Empresarial (IVACE), the Government of Castilla y León, the Xunta de Galicia and the Junta de Andalucía, through the Andalusian Energy Agency, were the first authorities that granted IONITY’s application to support the first funded locations on their territory. Now, further autonomous communities are within the decision-making process to be part of IONITY’s MOVES III Projects, such as:
- Comunidad de Madrid, through the Fundación de la Energía,
- Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Consejería de Transición Energética, Sectores Productivos y Memoria Democrática,
- Region of Murcia, through the Consejería de Empresa, Empleo, Universidades y Portavocía.
About MOVES III
The program for granting direct aid to the autonomous communities and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla for the implementation of incentive programs linked to electric mobility (MOVES III) was approved by Royal Decree in the Council of Ministers on April 13, 2021.
The MOVES III program is part of component 1: "Shock plan for sustainable, safe and connected mobility in urban and metropolitan environments" of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, which includes, among others, the massive deployment of recharging infrastructures as a key to promote electric vehicles.
MOVES III is an aid program for the development of electric mobility by means of the electric vehicle. It is managed by the Spanish Government’s Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE), a body attached to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO).
It was initially endowed with a budget of 400 million euros. This amount has been increased to 1,200 million, of which 876 million have already been transferred to the autonomous communities, which are responsible for its final distribution.
The MOVES III program has two lines of action to develop electric mobility by encouraging the purchase of electric vehicles (cars, vans, motorcycles and quadricycles) and the installation of the necessary infrastructure for their recharging.
